I am Moving Back to Blogger

Over the past couple of days and one pretty much sleepless night, I have had a lot of thinking to do about my blog A Veteran Runnah. Now my blog means a lot to me. I love writing and sharing my running life, along with occasional glimpses into other parts of my life you hope that you are enjoying it as well.

However due to the reasons that I listed in my post Moving Back to Blogger and some others, I am going to move A Veteran Runnah from this self-hosted WordPress.org blog back to Blogger.

Unfortunately, moving from a WordPress blog to a Blogger blog is not easy and it will take a while for everything to be moved. So I plan to keep the lights on heah for quite a while longer, but I do not anticipate adding new posts to this web address.

I hope that you decide to continue reading A Veteran Runnah at its new home and update you Feeds or email preferences.

Slow and Easy 4.0 Mile Recovery Run – 3/5/13

Believe it or not I am getting used to this idea that running slower is okay to do and is not a sign of weakness or injury. Wrapping my head around that huge philosophical shift was tough, but finally I am getting it.

Today while I was running slow, I did work on my midfoot landing and keeping my arm loose and close to my body, while running a consistent pace. Read the rest of this entry »

Team RWB and an Opportunity

Last week I got some GREAT news that was very unexpected.

Let me back up a little, so that you understand why it was unexpected, but very cool.

My blog’s name “A Veteran Runnah”, especially the Veteran part is actually a play on words and has three meanings.

1. I am a runner who has been running for quite a while.
2. My age puts me into the Veteran age group when it comes to racing.
3. However, the third Veteran status that I have earned and the one that I am most proud of – a U.S. Coast Guard Veteran.

Coast Guard

I spent almost 21 years in the Coast Guard and retired as a CWO3 – Personnel Administration. During my time in the military, I got to see, do and meet people who I never would have met otherwise. Read the rest of this entry »

1st Day New Plan and Interval Training 3/4/13

I started my modified Hanson training plan today and while I am excited with the idea that I actually have a plan that will provide some structure to my training through June, I am also worrying about how I will adapt to having this much structure. Especially since I haven’t had much structure to my training for a long time and have been doing mostly seat of my pants running.

The biggest modification to the Hanson plan is the day of the week that I do my SOS workout. So what did I do, well it is Monday, so for me that means Intervals – today 12 x 0.25 @6:43 pace, the difference for this workout was the slower pace in between the hard effort. Running With the Wife Again 3-4-13

TheWife Running Again 3-3-13

TheWife Running Again 3-3-13

I ran with the wife for the first time in around 5 years today and you know something – it was great. Over the past 5 years either I have been injured or she wasn’t running due to health concerns.

Well she started running a little while ago and today our schedules finally synced up. I was doing a cool-down lap and she was just getting going.

It felt good to run along side of her, talking about this or that and just enjoying one another’s company. I am so glad that she has started running again. This is something we did a lot of when we first got together and is a part of our relationship that I missed.

How did the less exciting part of my run go. Very well. I warmed up the first mile and tried to increase my pace a little each mile after that. It was an easy progression run and as you can see by the split chart I accomplished what I originally set out to do. Read the rest of this entry »

Overthinking the Marathon Book Review

Overthinking the Marathon by Ray Charbonneau

Overthinking the Marathon by Ray Charbonneau

I just finished reading an eBook call Overthinking the Marathon” by – Ray Charbonneau that was different from most of the “running” books that I tend to read, but in a good way.

Ray contacted me a while back and he asked if I wanted to review his new book “Overthinking the Marathon”. I said yes and (disclaimer) he sent me a free PDF copy of the book to review. I have never met Ray, but have read a few of his articles in other publications that I read.

Ray is an experienced marathoner and independent writer from Massachusetts, who has over 20 marathons to his credit and has been running for many years. The best part from my perspective is that he isn’t an Elite runner and his planned marathon time was fairly close to the same time that I am hoping to do.

So I was eager to read the book and get inside his head a little, to see if I could pick up any tips or tidbits from him. That I could use in my own preparations for the Marine Corps Marathon – in October.

This is not your typical “how to prepare for a Marathon book” that has chapters on diet, training plans, stretching, etc., instead Ray wrote it as a daily journal of his journey to the Cape Cod Marathon in 2012. Inside that story are a multitude of tips and strategies that runners can use to help train for our own race or marathon.

Easy run,Then I Hit the Snowmobile Trail

Snowmobile Trail 3-2-13

Snowmobile Trail 3-2-13

After my 10 miles on the treadmill in my new Altra Superior’s, I wanted to get them outside where they belong.

It was a perfect day to see how they would do on a wet nasty, snowy flurry kind of day. I planned on going at a 9:00 to 10:00 minute pace and not trying to stress my legs too much.

I went down to Tillson Hollow and the Superior’s did GREAT again. They felt very comfortable running on the tar, but even better when running on the dirt shoulder. They had great grip in the slush, wet dirt or wet tar and didn’t bother me in any way.

On the way back, I decided to come back up the snowmobile trails, to check out how the Superiors would do on slushy semi-packed snow. Read the rest of this entry »

First Impressions and Run in Altra Superior – 3/1/13

I got my Altra Superiors this afternoon after ordering them from Optimal Run on Wednesday – I don’t know why it took so long (yes that is sarcasm, this was faster than I thought it would be).

Optimal Run Thank You.2

Honestly, I am super impressed with the way Patton and the staff do things and recommend them highly to buy running shoes online.

I have really wanted the Superiors since they came out and came really close to getting a pair when I was at #RWHalf back in October. Unfortunately, I ran out of time and money, so I didn’t get them then. The more I have researched and read other reviews of the Superiors, it only confirmed that I wanted them for my trail shoes this year. Read the rest of this entry »
